Material Series: Featuring stone in any facade

|

Using stone in your facade is a great addition to any home design. Stone can provide extra intricacy and elevate your overall aesthetic. It does come at a price, stonework and masonry are one of the most expensive materials you can build your home with. However, they are the most durable and long-lasting. Homes built fully from stone, aren’t nearly as popular as they used to be (think early 20th century stone cottages). Nowadays, stone is a versatile feature for most home styles.

Using stone in a traditional home

The idea of a traditional home can sometimes be difficult to grasp, as the concept changes overtime. A traditional home is reliant on the current and most popular trends for facades and floor plans. Features like a hipped roof and feature gables are commonly included on most homes, therefore, would be considered traditional.

Choosing a stone for a traditional home should rely on the colour, texture, and size of the stone. These factors are what needs to be considered to choose a feature stone to balance with the other aspects of a home, such as the brick, cladding and render. For example, a thinner stone with a lighter colour can provide more of a ‘beachy’ Hampton’s feel, as seen in the image below. The slimmer stonework compliments the lines created by the cladding on the first storey and tie in with the outlines made from the mouldings around the garage doors and windows.

Using stone is a contemporary home

Feature stonework can also be used in conjunction with other home styles, like in our beautiful Montérno home. The Montérno is an example of a contemporary home. Contemporary homes are similar to traditional homes in the way that they are always evolving to fit a modern context. This style of home is all about reflecting the architecture of today. It borrows many features from what would usually be considered ‘modern’ homes, like sleek lines and minimalism.

Our contemporary Montérno Home uses a wider feature stone, to contrast against other horizontal lines created by the roof, windows and balcony. This means that the feature stone could be further emphasised, instead of blending in with the home. Our Montérno + Homely Hampton’s designs are an example of utilising stonework with any facade, whilst still maintaining a specific home style.

Using stone in an ultra-modern home

Ultra-Modern home design is currently all about making the home blend in with its natural surroundings and being created in consideration with the environmental impact. The focus of this style is designing the home for comfort. That is, being comfortably placed in the surrounding land and comfortable for the owner. These homes are intentional and aim to directly impact the well-being of the people living in them. Practically, these designs feature clean lines, basic shapes and simple materials.

Because stone is a long-lasting and durable material, its popular amongst ultra-modern homes. It is often featured similarly to other home styles, in feature walls, or around fireplaces and chimneys. Using a larger stone with less lines to create more of a basic look, can provide an intricate detail, whilst maintaining the minimalist and simple nature of ultra-modern homes.
