Material Series: How to use cladding in your next building project

|

At Atria Designs we love hearing about your ideas for a project and helping you bring the visions to life. One way to easily influence your façade to suit a certain style is through including cladding. Cladding is a very versatile building material, available in many different textures, sizes and materials. Their diversity means that we can include this material for any design and customise the specific product to suit your individual project.

Using cladding in a traditional home

Traditional homes represent the most common home trends of the time period. Cladding is extremely versatile for these types of homes, as it is widely available and comes in range of different styles. Realistically, cladding can be used easily in traditionally designed homes, in conjunction with any home style. Cladding of lighter variations can express more of a Hamptons or country feel. Tones like grey, white and light cream can further emphasise this idea. In terms of size, usually these homes feature standard sized cladding, which is usually around 15cm between groves. This can be seen in our gorgeous Suburban Retreat home, where the feature cladding is used to emphasise the clients wish for a Hamptons influence.

Having a homely and cosy feel isn’t all that cladding can provide. Its adaptable nature means that it can be included in more modern home styles as well. For example, darker toned cladding can provide more of a modern and eclectic look. This is also the case for darker grey tones, because they are less commonly used, they can provide a modern finish. This style also looks great when contrasted against lighter features, such as window frames and doors.

Using cladding in a contemporary home

Contemporary homes are similar to traditional homes in the way that they always evolve to fit a modern context. This design style is all about reflecting the design possibilities of today. It borrows many features from what would usually be considered a ‘modern home’, like sleek lines and minimalism. This style is very much rising in popularity for its effortlessly elegant nature.

Because contemporary homes most commonly feature smooth stepped horizontal lines, including cladding as a feature is a great way to continue this theme. Depending on your specific design, you can balance the existing materials with feature cladding. For example, choosing a timber whether board would be a great way to include a warmer material in your facade design, as seen in our Modern Suburbia home. The timber features accentuate the tones in the colour of the render. This creates more of a balanced and harmonious look.

Using cladding in an ultra-modern home

Choosing an ultra-modern design style doesn’t mean that your material selections can’t be also found in other homes. Cladding is a very versatile product, so is featured in many façades, however, you can still choose a specific style of a product to suit an ultra-modern home. It’s possible to include classic materials in a cutting-edge format. Ultra-modern homes are focused on the most innovative and fresh features. By introducing cladding in a way that isn’t commonly used, we can give new life to this traditional material.

This can be seen in our stunning Gorgeous Gables home. This design moves away from what would be considered a traditional home. The façade features a slim, and vertically installed dark grey cladding on the wall at the end of the garage gable. This inclusion assists in featuring the roof line above it, as the thin cladding creates vector lines, leading the eye upwards. The cladding also juxtaposes itself against the horizontal shutters on the windows, forcing it to further stand out, as it deserves.
